What is Antimicrobial Fabric, Anyway?

Posted on

By Maureen Doolan, Canada

We've all heard the word "antimicrobial" but what does it truly mean. Because Wear AMPM Scrubs has scrubs that offer protection through their antimicrobial properties, we’ve decided to put together this guide to antimicrobial fabric, so you know exactly what you’re buying and why it’s important!

Antimicrobial

An antimicrobial is defined as an agent, chemically or naturally made, that can inhibit the growth and/or kill microorganisms. For example, that disinfectant spray on your kitchen counter is an antimicrobial agent – as it can kill microbes in your kitchen that could make you sick. Antibiotics, antifungal, antiparasitic and antiviral medication also all come under the antimicrobial umbrella! Basically, if something kills or inhibits microbes, on or in a non-living or a living thing, it has antimicrobial properties.

Antimicrobial fabric and why it’s important

It doesn’t take a genius to work out why antimicrobial fabric is beneficial in a clinical setting! Antimicrobial scrubs are made with fabric that has antimicrobial agents included, meaning that when you come into contact with bacteria in the hospital, your scrubs will help kill or limit the bacteria. Wearing high-quality antimicrobial scrubs decreases the likelihood of you passing on dangerous bacteria to either yourself or others through contact with your clothing.

As you’re going from patient to patient, you’re bound to encounter varying types of bacteria, so it’s best not to take a chance with your scrubs. Of course, you still need to be as vigilant as ever with hand washing and other hospital hygiene practices!

Antimicrobial scrubs also help with odor reduction, as odors generally originate from bacteria, which means you can keep your scrubs feeling fresh for your whole shift before taking them home for washing. As technology has improved, antimicrobial scrubs also tend to last longer than normal scrubs and wash well without losing any of their microbial properties. They’re also comfortable and are gentle on your skin, so, investing in antimicrobial scrubs is now the obvious choice for anyone that works in a clinical setting!
